Hey,
I know how to use google so you can stuff the witty Internet prick comments.
Couple of questions: Do custom XP themes affect the performance of the operating system? Are they easy to install? Know of any good sites?
Thanks in advance.

Yes they will. If you use programs like "blinds" It ihnk it's called, it will use resources. I onyl use a background image and the new taskbar.

I use a patched uxtheme.dll that will work with a lot of themes you can get from themexp.org
It uses no more resources then any of the default windows themes.

Yeah, that site is a bit of pain, but easily dealt with if you attack it with the proper browser.

UXTheme.dll patch (works with SP2)
For those that don't already have it. Just follow the on-screen instructions.

The downloads are installation exe's, and part of the installation demands that they install toolbars and other stuff. All the downlaods were like this.
