would you attack canada?
if your leader/s declared war on canada. what would you do?
reasons for war? sorry. all the information i'm giving you are that your leader has declared war on canada, and is going to send in troops. you are already enlisted in the army (not drafted).
do you go?
if not.. then what do you do? would you as a soldier turn on your own government? is this legal? is failure to do so illegal?
some questions i'm pondering.
serious topic. don't dodge the subject with canada jokes.

canada has sentimental meaning? well, i suppose so.
attacking your friendly neighbour, would feel like attacking your own country. but if your leader told you to do it, anything less than "YES SIR" will be unamerican and/or illegal.
so i'm wondering how strong your ability to say no is.
your assertiveness as individuals, your measure of your ability to see yourself as seperate to your country. your loyalty to yourselves VS your loyalty to your country.
i thought canada would be an interesting target for the hypothetical, because it's the closest thing to killing your true cultural fellow man. it guarentees hestiation - allowing your mind to play out it's ethical dilema.
a dilema that this thread is designed to bring to light in absense of the real thing. the power of hypotheticals.

I really could care less about a general Canadian essence, the word Canada, or what Canada means to me. Granted, I live in New Mexico, but that's just the way it is for me.
Now, if the case may be, I would not want to have war declared on innocents, but you haven't provided information to that regard, and this thread doesn't seem to be anything about that.

Since there would have to be some kind of build up prior to the war, there would also have to be information given as to why. Contrary to what you Aussies may blindly do, We Americans want some kind of justification for a war being initiated (me waits for Vanders and Birdys response disabusing me of this notion) especially against a long time ally and friend.
Contrary to most armies, Americas troops are trained to question orders if they are grossly mis-appropriate.
So I would say no to a out of the blue order to attack our northern friends. On the plus side though, where would the draft dodgers go?

how can anyone take a topic like that seriously?Robo wrote:roid wrote:serious topic. don't dodge the subject with canada jokes.
is it really so preposterous kurupt?
every culture is at war with itself in some respects. religious, idealogical. it doesn't take much of a shift to kick things up to a more extreme gear.
there's already a war on drugs, which the usa president has indicated* makes canada somewhat of a "target" in usa's eyes.
(*even though the world is kindof learning to ignore all "indictations" from this guy anyway. but i digress.)
i asked some questions in the first post.
if the answer seems obvious to any of you personally, then please tell me all the same. it's not obvious to me.
i wonder if most of you are too afraid to think about the question.

Your question is so unrealistic we can't answer it.
You can't be in the army here and not know the reason given for the war...plain and simple.
So it's hard to choose between duty and common sense when you know that particular choice wouldn't ever come up in real life.
Knowing what we know about our system your question doesn't have a correct answer and we just don't want to pick between two wrong ones (presidential elections excluded).
If I had to guess what the outcome would be I'd guess there would be a majority of people who would refuse to fight without knowing the reason for the war...a lot of people would be in favor of removing the commander from power for ordering a war without reason...the congress would be outraged...the lawyers would be boiling over...the hippies would get major wood over finally having a real cause to protest...Geraldo wouldn't know which hat to put on and he would explode thinking about it....Crosby Stills Nash & Young would do a big comback tour...and the Canadians would be pissing in their pants

i think the question was rediculous roid. for this reason:
nobody in the service here would go to war without reason. we will go to war for reasons that seem good but were found to be false later on (like the wmd's for instance), but we wont just be like "man, i hate those head flappers. lets drop the bomb."
you'll find we aren't the barbaric immoral assholes that foreigners stereotype us as. well, most of us anyway.
we'd impeach a president for getting a blowjob, so i'd imagine we'd do the same for one who starts a drunken barfight with another country. and i'm sure the presidents all know that coming in.

If someone declares war on Canada, it won't be New Zealand. Quite apart from our complete lack of ability to even defend our own country, we possess a singular lack of motivation to prosecute a war against a fellow member of the British Commonwealth.
If someone ELSE declares war on Canada, then for sure, we can send about 30,000,000 sheep, armed to the teeth (as food-on-legs, and good-sweater-making-material basically) and all four of our own soldiers, complete with clapped out WWII .303 rifles, and an old Bren Gun.
