Well, circumstances decided it was time for an upgrade. Namely, a disk crash. Arrgh.

Now, since I was replacing the old P1 166 I though what the hell, may as well get a real machine. So I did. Since I'm sick of huge computer cases, I decided to give mATX a shot:

Old MidiTower box included for size comparision, cat included because he was there.

The black thing is my nice new Mustek PowerMust 600VA UPS. It's supposed to give 10 minutes backup at half load - the server currently draws 15% load without a monitor, so I'm guessing at some 30 minutes if I'm lucky. Haven't had a chance to attempt to endure 30 minutes of beeping to see if that is the case. After the HDD incident, I decided I'm not taking any chances (tape backups did exist that were about two weeks old. the problem: I ran out of tape when I took that backup and didn't notice, so the backup was... partial.)

Oh, and I didn't need to add blue LEDs in after, either (the stripe below the power button is lit by the HDD light - looks real nifty flashing in the dark):

Yeah, only by 6% though, so I'm not terribly worried. Certainly seems to run fine.

Testing shows the UPS provides backup power for a full 22.5 minutes. Definitely not bad...

Didn't know you were a cat owner too, WoA. Nice cat. Does the same "why-the-hell-are-you-taking-a-picture-of-me" glare that my cats do.

The 49C idle temp is a little off-putting though but seeing how it got as high as 70C at one point so I guess it's not so bad. It'd probably still die if bought out here during the summer though which was what really put me off putting a spare A7N266-VM I have here in a uATX box.

49C might not be accurate in the bios. mine generally runs at 35c actual but the bios always reports it around 50c, sometimes jumping to 75c but ive checked it at these times and it was a steady mid 30's.

i was curious and looked it up, and apparently this is common. i really flipped out when it told me i was running at 75c too
