how I spent my tuesday night

My 18 year old son did this Tuesday night, been telling him to slow down but I guess Dads just a dumbass. rolled it 2 1/2 times it was 40 ft out into a field, he went through an 8 foot deep ditch to get there. the car was still on its side when I got there, believe it or not all he got was a scratch of his elbow. he had a Guardian Angel in the passenger seat that night. still wont admit he was doin 75 in a 35mph corner tho. you would have thought that with his father being a Bodyman for the last 22 years he would have learned something from watching me work on cars, guess not. note the roof and door, that wasnt a tree or pole its the the car stood on its nose and landed on the edge of the ditch and its laying right on the drivers headrest

Kids need to learn by their own mistakes. For some unknown reason, they can't seem to think that their parents have been through the same thing.

well for the last 2 days at least he has been a very humble young man, we'll see how long it lasts. BTW there was no alcohol involved just going too fast

u get in to a big huge crash where the car is prity much a little cube and u walk away with a bruse, but is u get in to a little frnder bender you brake an arm or some thang

Glad things worked out well for you and yours CUDA, looks like it could have been a lot different.

The risks i took when i was a kid make me shiver when i think of them now.

I have an 18 year old too, he wrecked his about 2 months ago. It wasn't nearly as bad as that but it took me about 3 weeks to fix it (took my good old time) and during that time he had to walk. He drives slower now

I'm just glad you son wasn't hurt!!

There have been stories about kids driving too fast here in Belgium, but I can assure you they weren't as lucky as your son. In fact, they're no longer here to tell about it.

I can't speak for others, but even though cars are my hobby and passion, I take my driving fury to the track, not the public road.

You need to have a serious talk with your boy. A very close friend of mine lost his son in a car crash because he was speeding. What made it worse is that he had two other boys in the car that were killed instantly. Unfortunately his son lived for a month in a coma before passing. That is of course a parents worst nightmare. I'm very happy to hear that your son is ok and hope that he is smart enough to learn from this.

i lost a friend due to something simliar, while still the driver was DUI, they were goign a bit too fast and a car came around a corner. my friend sitting in the middle of the back seat - with a belt on somehow managed to smash his skull in off the windscreen which was hard up against a wall.

Don't mind Sage, hes just a stupid youngin like the kind we're talking about in this thread.

In my Junior year of HS I had a friend who, while out with his buddies, was speeding a good deal in his pickup one night. He took a corner too quickly and rolled the truck and being that he was the only one not wearing a seatbelt he was thrown out the window as it was rolling and the truck rolled over the top of him and killed him.

The other two guys (whom I didn't know) both lived. After this incident I was deathly afraid of driving. Not because I felt I wasn't responsible, but for fear of other people behind the wheel. As a result it wasn't until a few years later that I learned how to drive and got my own vehicle.

Lets just say that anytime the folks gave me strict pointers about driving, my ears were open. A lot of it is common sense though and a good lesson to remember is that being over confident and reckless can often lead to a quick grave.

I'm just thankful for you Cuda, that your boy was extremely lucky and didn't end up worse off. You've put a lot of hard work into all those kids of yours and it would be a shame to lose one out of plain stupidity. I'm sure he has learned his lesson quite well, it's unfortunate that it took a potentially fatal incident to do it. Best of wishes to you and yours though.

Cuda, does he have any idea just HOW CLOSE he was to death? The roof is crushed JUST behind the drivers seat. ... I'm sure you noticed that. His Guardian Angel should get paid double time for that one.

as an 18 year old who just drove today for about 30 minutes with my dad in the car, i got to say its nice to be reminded of this stuff.

sure, my dad was in the car, and I drive pretty damn slowly (im not very experienced, and I almost never drive above the speed limit), but speaking as a kid, sometimes things just get a little out of hand, and even as a VERY cautious driver, I had two close calls today.

One of them was when I underestimated a turn and didn't realize how fast I was going and took a 70-90 degree angle turn at about 60 MPH, and the other was when I was pulling onto the highway, and I swear I was less than a foot away from clipping the back of a 16 wheeler as I pulled on (I don't think my dad noticed, good thing, he woulda had a heart attack).

this sh*t ain't a joke, and I feel privledged to realize it...

The thing I hate is when you KNOW you are a cautious driver and you still get screwed up somehow, for example...

Couple years ago while going to one of my college classes I got slapped with a speeding ticket from one of those random photo-radars saying I was going like 56mph in a 45mph zone. Thats complete BS because I don't drive more then 3-4mph over the speed limit.

Even if I was running late the fastest I'd be going is maybe 50mph since technically you're allowed 5mph over the speed limit here. Was going to fight it because It's embarrassing to get a ticket in the mail with a picture of you behind the wheel and you know there was no way in hell you were going almost 60mph in a 45. Ended up just paying the fine, the bastids.

Was funny, because the other day I was driving through the same area and found myself going about 40mph, lol. Stupid paranoia-inducing photo-radars

well fortunately I was smart enough to make each one of my kids get thier OWN insurance policy, so it wont effect mine at all, also made them buy thier own cars. being that I am an autobodyshop Manager you would have thought he would have learned something from others miss-haps, guess sometimes you gotta just find out for your self, knowing what it takes to fix wrecked cars I know exactly how much force it took to do that much damage, the scary part he was by himself on a country road, if he had gotten injured where the car was located at he might not have been found for several days

btw Cuda, i think your son is a superhero after getting only a scratch from that. wasn't he sore? i mean, you'd be whipped around something chronic. you'd at least have a sore neck, or at least seatbelt marks.

Even though it's not really applicable here, I'd like to say "don't drink and drive".
A ride can turn horribly wrong in a fraction of a second, so don't help it get worse by drinking. An ex of mine died because she took her car when she was drunk as hell...

Hehe...we have a kind of a joke over here in Germany: "Er fuhr Ford und kam nie zurueck" (He drove Ford and he never returned - "fort" [with "t"] means "away").

Last nite (around midnite, when I left a pub) I saw a some 18/19year old guys who let their motos howl in front of red traffic lights and when seeing "green" they flored their gas-pedal and accellerated - for the next 600ft - just to halt in front of the next red traffic light. - idiots.... but somewhen they will also learn their lesson.

Its about 4 years ago that I had a Guardian Angel on my back-seat: My girl friend and I drove on the left lane on the Autobahn with about 170km/h (ca. 110mph?) to overtake a truck that drove (with about 50 mph) on the right lane). Behind us drove a mercedes and the right lane behind the truck was empty. (sure...who wants to crawl with 50 mph???).
Suddenly I saw a Porsche 911 in my "back mirror" driving VERY fast on the right lane. (here we aren't allowed to overtake on the right lane)
Only a few feet behind the truck the 911 hit the brakes as hard as he could: I could see a dust of wheel-rubber (very impressive :-/ ).
When I realized that he would bump into the rear of this truck he tried to get on the left lane...and crahed into the Mercedes that was driving right behind me.
Both, Merceds and Porsche flew like two billard-balls accross the lanes and finally landed in a small wood the autobahn went thru....
Don't know what happend to them.
But I will never forget this.

That is one very trashed car, lucky kid. Tell him to slow down. Its rare for anyone to see me driving any higher then 4-5 miles over the limit, I've never gotten a ticket yet, and I have no intention of changing that pattern any time soon. Tell your kid next time there might not be just a big open field to catch him, but a 18 wheeler instead.

I'm very glad to hear you son made it out ok. There was a guy in my high school that killed himself by driving too fast- 2 days after he got his license he was passing a truck at about 95 MPH in a 25, no passing zone- saw traffic, swerved into the right lane again just in front of the truck, lost control and hit a pole. I basically split the car in half- he and one passenger were dead by the time the police got there, a second passenger had a severe concussion leading to brain damage (but he survived), the third passenger walked away without a scratch. Thank God he spared your son, CUDA, because I have seen alot worse.

my brother, a few years ago when he was not exactly smart as he is now, got a "Mailed Ticket" the stupid SOB ( i almost missed this ) tried to mail a copy of a check to the PD.

i told him "WTF are you trying to do?!?!?!" he said " well, they mailed me a copy of the ticket so im gonna mail them a copy of the check for the fine."
