Setting up RAID 1 pre Win 7 install

Post by FireFox »

While I'm waiting for my new mobo and other components to arrive I just want to check if I have the setup process correct of what I'd like to achieve.

I have two HDD's (120gb & 250gb) to my disposal. I would like to set them up as my OS drive in my new build in a raid 1 config. The mobo has build in raid support so I was thinking I'd have to do the following. BTW the OS will be a fresh install of win7 ultimate 64bit.

1) Partition the 250gb into two partitions namely a 120gb & 130gb
2) Setup the raid 1 array in cmos liking the two 120gb partitions
3) Install win7 on the raid 1 array. It does look like when I install win7 I'd first need to enter the repair mode and install the raid drivers from the mobo driver disk and then continue to install win7.

This should then leave me with win7 on the 120gb raid 1 array and a second 130gb partition to my disposal I'm gonna use as a general temp drive over the network.

Is that all the steps in basic terms or am I missing anything?

Thanks

No, unless you are using intel's fancy implementation of RAID, then you'd only have one 120GB partition for a RAID 1 array.
