NEW YORK â?? American athletes have been warned not to wave the U.S. flag during their medal celebrations at this summer's Olympic Games in Athens, for fear of provoking crowd hostility and harming the country's already-battered public image.
What next? Are we going to start intentionally losing so some other nations can feel good about themselves?

Yes Bash. In fact, we should just not show up.

It is just a warning, not a policy.

Little Green Footballs said it best:
This is good, but it doesnâ??t go far enough. To really repair our wounded reputation, the athletes, when accepting their medals, should also apologize for oppressing their fellow athletes from less-privileged countries by committing the transgression of beating them.
A user responded:
Seems to me Charles, that YOU haven't gone far enough. When USA wins gold, they should turn their backs on the flag, yell, "Allah Akbar" and apologize for making the Islamicists attack us, causing a PR problem.
Ahhhh... such beautiful sarcasm.

Here's a good, serious user comment:
Compare this to the events depicted in the recent movie "Miracle" about the 1980 Winter Olympics with the US vs. USSR hockey game.

If we could openly skate around with American flags and the crowd roaring USA! USA! USA! to our mortal enemy then, what does this say about our current mindset?

Wave it high and wave it proud. If anyone takes it as anything other then being patriotic to ones own country then they're seriously some stupid people in the world.

I'm reminded of that Robin Williams thread...
Robin Williams wrote:The Statue of Liberty is no longer saying "Give me your poor, your tired, your huddled masses." She's got a baseball bat and she's yelling, "You want a piece of me?"
Come on world....the baseball bat is now preemptive. Come get some :P

I think it would be a nice gesture for a winner of the gold to give his medal to some poor palestinian who could then buy some explosives to go matyr himself with.
