Greetings all.
Just yesterday I installed D2 onto my XP comp (300 MHz, 256MB), and patched it with a win95 patch from PD. When I went into the sound setup, and told it to autodetect, it broke out of fullscreen and show this screen:

My souind card is a
Sound Blaster AWE64

Any clues?

I'm guessing you won't get very far trying to run a DOS hardware configuration utility under XP. Have you considered using D2X-XL?

The windows 95 version of D2 sound only works in the 4.x versions of windows (95-98SE). The 5.x versions of windows such as 2000 or XP won't work.

Yes, I've tried to use D2x-XL, but I can never get it to work properly... And it might be a major igrane for Diedel to solve the problem, certainly he has better things to do.

reading Topics on this board first is so hard to do for the noobz

Read links in the first post

If you still can not get D2Win95, DESCENT2.EXE and D2X-XL working after reading all supplied links. Then you need to Uninstall your User from your sisters PC and go outside!@ :P OH and BTW Autodetect does not work.... in A DOS setup Program on XP

I really think that it's not XP that needs Compatibilty Mode but the Users

No money for an OpenGL capable gfx card?

D2W95 doesnt use OpenGL, and it is crashing at the sound detection (which makes sense in any windows 5.x system).

Krom, Setup.exe has nothing to do with D2Win95.exe

Setup.exe only is used for DESCENT2.EXE(AKA DOS)

D2Win95 in windoz98 Compalitbility mode will use the Multimedia settings found in the control panel including USB Joysticks, it's just butt ugly and like a slideshow in multiplayer...... poor performance.

Also if Setup.exe is set to Compat mode, it will work. Autodetect DOES NOT WORK... and if I have to go into detail about why that is, then you need to review DOS programs explicit idea of hardware....

But only use setup.exe if you plan on running D23dfx.exe with hacked 3dfx drivers from voodoofiles.net

Once Again

I've had no trouble at all running D2 Win95 under XP. Did it all the time when I had two laptops, a P3 500 and a P3 450, at school on a crossover network. DEATH TO NEWBS :D Had to run in Win98 comptability mode to get networking to work though.

Awesome thing about running D2W95 under XP over 95/98, is it actually uses the 22khz sounds. SOOOOOOO much better than the 11khz it insists on under non-NT OSes.

Just for the record, XP does have primitive DOS sound support:

(Music is just General MIDI on port 330)

But again, if you're running the Win95 port (either on a patched DOS version or installed from an Infinite Abyss or other CD collection) then that'll hook into DirectX and ignore the DOS config altogether.
