well, Final Cut Pro can run up to $1000 bucks if you're really serious.

Torrent a copy of Adobe Premiere, its great.

Premiere Elements. (Pretty much the best out there in affordable video editing imo)

I have VirtualDub, but if I have understood this program right, all you can do is cut a video clip into parts and convert/compress it. You cannot put clips together and add sound and text. Or am I wrong?

Ulead MediaStudio Pro 8 is a good program. It runs 199 on Ulead.com but I'm sure other websites sell it cheaper. I'm using Pro 7 right and works great for my needs. So I won't be upgrading for a while.

I have the Ulead VideoStudio Upgrade Version 10 Plus.
As long as you have Ulead VideoStudio 6,7,8,9 Full or SE versions. You can do the upgrade for $99 AUD.
I got the free Version 7 SE when I got a DVD DL burner nearly 2 years ago.

if it is an option, I'd use iMovie. Really easy, really quick, and actually quite powerful. You need to have a Mac, of course.

I think it does. I use it all the time to clip the commercials out of the stuff that I record with my tv input card. I have never downgraded the video size, because I have it set up record at 320x240, but I think is has the capability. I'm pretty sure gordian knot uses virtualdub in the background to do all of its video modification. (I'm pretty sure everything I mentioned is legal... at least I have a clean conscous about it.)
