Why was this option removed?

Because it also has the side effects of thread starters being able to delete threads.

I just discovered you still can do it as long as no one has replied after you. That's a nice feature.

Just modify it so that the first post is not deleteable after someone has replied.

phpBB doesn't permit non-moderators to delete posts that have been responded to. The only way to change that is to modify the board.
