I remember a friend and I wanted to play against each other in a game that only supported lan multiplayer, so we connected over the Internet in such a way that our computers saw each other as local. What's the specific term for this type of networking? it's not a Wan is it?

LAN- Local, just inside your home network.
WAN - Wide, internet play or several LANs hooked together through the net.

So you're saying it was a WAN. Ok. Thanks.

Hamachi - appear as a LAN over a WAN/Internet via tcp/ip encapsulation
That's the program you are looking for

I believe the "technical" terminology is a VLAN.
And 2x on Hamachi - I've played UT2007 over it, it works great.

VLAN's are just to logically segregate layer 2. Your entire floor or building might be on the same LAN physically, but you may want them to be logically segregated into VLAN's, especially if the jackasses' infected machines across the hall are trying to ARP spoof your machines and steal your gmail passwords (true story).

Sounds a little like a VPN, but there may be some differences.
