There is a world out there, you just have to go out and see it.

Soccer (football) is not high upon the agenda of Americas media. It's not the most popular sport over there, and gets very little coverage which i can understand perfectly but do me a sodding favour. When there is a bit of juice attatched to the story it's front page. Whoever heard of Adrian Mutu or the team he plays for before you'd catch the soundbite on your TV, none of you i'm sure. (apart from robbo)

This is not an attack upon American media, 'cause they're all the bloody same.

There is a far more powerful entity in town than the old classification of "enemy". It makes me feel like our western utopia of freedom of the press makes us more manipulated than the old "pravda" days.

Ok....i know i did a Roid and jumped a few stages but you know what i mean.

Ummm... Am I missing something here FC?
North American sport have all kinds of drug test failure problems. Some very high level athletes have tested positive for cocaine (and other drugs) and been suspended, even turfed out for repeated offences. Why is this article bugging you? Too much being made of the event? When it happens here there is considerable press coverage too.

But the only reason soccer gets mentioned on CNN is 'cause of cocain, that was the thing that riled me. Or in another way i've only ever herd of Kobe Bryant through the rape case. It's this kind of sensationalism that, if you think about it, gives a platform and audience for sick terrorist groups.

Or am i being too picky?

CNN isn't a sports channel. Why would they cover sports-related stories? It just happens that those two people you mentioned were fairly popular for whatever reason, so they get news time.

Your problem Flabby is that you expect quality from news media. Clearly you are exposed to too much BBC. That stuff will poison your mind against the "infotainment" that passes for news in North America and particularly the U.S. The sad part is that most people over here don't even realize the problem exists.

Most of us don't really care about soccer even when someone playing it is using drugs. Doubt that makes you feel any better :P

1. Americans dont give a rats arse about soccer.

2. We are entertained by mob violence.

3. We are entertained by violence at sporting events.

Put 2 and 3 together and you see why soccer riots make the front page here.

That's why the UFC is so popular down in the states.

it was labeled "international" and "football", so it doesn't look too sensational to me. maybe i just need some more background information.

was it really on the frontpage?
