FIRST Robotics Competition
Has started today w/ the kickoff event. I like the game and changes in the kit they came up w/ for this season, the next 6 weeks will be quite busy
Check the FRC out at http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/ If there's a regional competition going on near you go check it out -- it's a blast.

I'm a part of the BEST robotics competition. It's a lower-cost alternative; a thousand bucks will MORE than finance a team for the competition. It's an awesome competition; the students have to actually design and make each part of the robots themselves out of PVC, plywood, and other such low-end but workable materials.
The results aren't quite as spectacular, but it teaches you to deal with real-world problems such as insufficient materials and low-quality materials. Making a woven basket out of strips of PVC pipe can get fun.
