Who coined that expression that a program is "running"? Heck, I am sitting here for ages already, watching my application
crawl through what it has to do.

If you translate the word we use in Dutch literally, you say "programs are turning"..

I think it's short for "runtime."

Maybe you'd like to execute that program instead.

Sure it does!
The three finger salute!

(and if you're in NT/2000/XP (with friendly logon disabled in XP) you'll get the option to run Task Manager, which can kill any visible program "running".

)

Hell, in XP with Friendly Logon enabled, CTRL+ALT+DEL gives you the task manager immediately.
Plus there's a DOS program called kill that can be installed from the Windows CD. It even matches regular expressions... "kill fire*" killes process named firefox, firebird, etc. Just never do "kill *".

Heh, I remember that. I tried kill * just because you said not to.

ctrl+shift+esc opens the Task Manager no matter what kind of logon you use. I imagine it works on any NT OS with the Task Manager in it.

Vindi: yeah, Krom pointed out the link to the file on microsoft.com. The first thing I did after downloading it was "kill *". Instant reboot.

I think it came from the fact that you had to type
RUN
in basic to actually start a program that was in memory.
